RocKwiz

July 30th 2010 07:25
RocKwiz is an Australian television quiz show series, focused on rock music and broadcast on SBS One.

The forty minute program airs on Saturday at 9:20 pm, and is hosted by Julia Zemiro. It is shot in The Gershwin Room at St Kilda's Esplanade Hotel, commonly called just the The Espy, in Melbourne. The program often includes local lesser-known musicians (predominantly vocalists), alongside more well known Australian and non-Australian musicians. It has a cult following for its no-frills style. The show features the "RocKwiz Orkestra" which provides musical clues and support for special music guests and participants.

SBS now provides an online version of RocKwiz for everyone to enjoy.

Rules:

Upon every new question you will be given 20 seconds to answer.

You have three lives.

If you get a question wrong, your score will revert to zero.
To avoid this, bank your points and you have scored enough. Your name will then go on the leaderboard.

For every three correct answers you will receive a wildcard. This will allow you to skip a difficult question later on.

Cash Cab

July 28th 2010 07:16
Cash Cab is a TV game show devised by Adam Wood that originated in the United Kingdom and has been licensed to television networks in numerous other countries. Passengers in a specially outfitted taxi cab are surprised and offered the chance to win money by correctly answering a series of general knowledge or trivia questions on the way to their destination. The American version of Cash Cab has comedian Ben Bailey as host, while the Australian version features James Kerley, and the Canadian version features Adam Growe.

A support van tails the Cash Cab containing producers and a camera crew for the various street shots. The staff provides logistical information and questions by way of a walkie-talkie and earpiece worn by the host. After the potential contestants enter and hire the cab, they are made aware that they are in the Cash Cab as lights and a fanfare play inside accompanied by the host's greeting. The contestants are also told that once their travelling begins, the cab will not take detours of any kind unless directed by a police officer, stop sign, traffic light or other legal means of diverting traffic, and the host offers them the chance to get out of the cab if they do not wish to play. Contestants must stay in the cab until they reach their destination in order to keep the money they have won in the game.

If the passenger stays in the cab, the game begins.

Thanks to the Discovery Channel, an online version of Cash Cab is available to play for free.

Minute to Win It

July 26th 2010 07:06
Minute to Win It is a primetime reality/game show.

To advance to the next level, the contestant must successfully complete a given task with a time limit of 60 seconds, either having to fully complete the task before the time runs out, perform a specific action for the time period, or have a specific task be completed at the end of the period. If time expires or the conditions of the task cannot be fulfilled (such as by the contestant using up any allotted attempts or committing a foul), the contestant loses a life. If the contestant loses all three of their lives, the game ends and the contestant's winnings drop down to the $0 (if level 1 was not beaten), $1,000 (if level 5 was not beaten), $50,000 (if level 5 was beaten), or $250,000 (if level 8 was beaten). These tasks progressively increase in difficulty throughout the game.

Once a task is completed, the contestant can elect to walk away with money earned before seeing the next level's challenge. However, if the contestant sees the next level's challenge, he or she must play it out, using all remaining lives.

An online version of Minute to Win It is available to play for free. There are three one minute challenges to complete, and higher points are awarded for completing each task quickly.

Canasta

July 12th 2010 02:26
Canasta (Spanish for "basket") is a card game originating in Uruguay but popularized in Argentina (hence the alternate name Argentine Rummy), in which players attempt to make melds of 7 cards of the same rank, and "go out" by playing all cards in their hand and discarding. It is a variant of Rummy and 500 Rum. It is commonly played by four players in two partnerships with two standard decks of cards, but many variations exist for 2-3 and 6-player games or teams.

The game is for two to six players, either each player for themselves or in teams of two (only for four or six player games). If partners are chosen they must sit opposite each other. Canasta uses two complete decks of 52 playing cards (French Deck) plus the four Jokers. All the Jokers and deuces (twos) are wild cards

Whist

July 9th 2010 01:57
Whist is a classic English trick-taking card game which was played widely in the 18th and 19th centuries. It derives from the 16th century game of Trump or Ruff. Although the rules are extremely simple, there is enormous scope for scientific play.

A standard 52 card pack is used. The cards in each suit rank from highest to lowest: A K Q J 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2. Whist is played by four players, who play in two partnerships with the partners sitting opposite each other. Players cut or draw cards to determine partners with the two highest playing against the lowest two, who have seating rights. The players then cut for deal. It is strictly against the rules to comment on the cards in any way. One may not comment upon the hand one was dealt nor about one's good fortune or bad fortune. One may not signal to one's partner
