Never Mind the Buzzcocks

September 26th 2011 03:56
Never Mind the Buzzcocks is a comedy panel game television show with a pop music theme, currently without a permanent presenter. It stars Phill Jupitus and Noel Fielding (from 2009) as team captains. The show is produced by Talkback Thames for the BBC, and is usually aired on BBC Two. The title plays on the names of punk rock band Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks album, and the pop punk band Buzzcocks.
The show is noted and known for its dry, sarcastic humour and scathing, provocative attacks on the music industry. It has also had some controversial guests throughout its 15-year run.

The show usually consists of four rounds. The first round has changed multiple times over the course of the show. It now usually consists of the teams being asked a question concerning a unique fact about a musical artist or artists, such as "Why did Girls Aloud have to once cancel a show?" or "What have we pixelated in this still from a music video?" Sometimes the teams are given options to pick from and other times they have no help. Alternatively, the first round is 'Connections' in which the teams are asked to identify the connection between two bands or artists.

The second round is the Intros Round, wherein two members of a team are asked to convey the introduction of a song a cappella (but using vocal sounds for instruments rather than words) for their fellow team mate to guess. During the Christmas specials, the teams are often given instruments with which to play, though they are usually inappropriate or toy instruments.

The third round is usually the Identity Parade, though this has occasionally been replaced by a few other alternative rounds. The audience is shown a video of a usually old musician, and the teams have to pick the correct person from a line-up of five people. The audience and people at home are the only ones to see the video, making it harder for the contestants.

The final round is called 'Next Lines', in which the host will speak a line of a song and the team must name the next line of the song. Often the songs chosen will be ones mentioned in earlier rounds and ones recorded by panel members. In the latter case, guests often prove incapable of reciting the lyrics to their own songs; for example, Romeo Stodart of The Magic Numbers failed entirely to recognise a line from a song which he joked was "like the B-side from our first single".

Spicks and Specks

September 23rd 2011 06:54
Spicks and Specks was an Australian music-themed comedic television quiz show. It aired on ABC1 at 8:30 on Wednesday nights. 2011 marked Spicks and Specks' seventh season. It was filmed at ABC Melbourne's Gordon Street studios.

The show was hosted by stand-up comedian Adam Hills who posed questions to two teams each headed by a permanent team captain, actor/comedian Alan Brough and Mildura-raised radio announcer Myf Warhurst. They each had two guest panellists, generally one from the world of music and one from comedy.

It varied from week to week, but regular guests include Hamish Blake, Tim Minchin, Frank Woodley, Colin Lane, Ross Noble, James Morrison, Renée Geyer, Ella Hooper, Meshel Laurie, Denise Scott and Dave O'Neil.

Blake appeared more often than any other guest panellist, and his comparative lack of musical knowledge was a running gag.

The overall style employing a mix of music and comedy is similar to the UK TV show Never Mind the Buzzcocks and fellow Australian TV show Rockwiz, but the question formats and show style (Satirical vs. Family vs. Pub Quiz) are different.

In May 2011, it was announced the seventh season would be the final season and the show would end in November 2011.

Millionaire Hot Seat

July 1st 2011 07:35
Hot Seat (also known as Millionaire Hot Seat) is a spin-off of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Millionaire Hot Seat

Designed to be a faster-paced game than the traditional format, Hot Seat essentially involves 6 contestants playing each episode, with each taking turns to climb the money tree. The traditional three lifelines are replaced by a single "pass", which can pass the current question to the next contestant in line (who cannot pass the question further). Each question is also given a time limit, with 15 seconds allocated for the first five questions, 30 for the middle five, and 45 for the last five. If a player fails to give out an answer in the time limit, it is considered an automatic pass. If that question can't be passed on, that player is eliminated and the highest value on the money tree is removed. (This format is considered to be similar to the gameplay of The Weakest Link, in the manner that "weak" contestants should pass if they are unsure of a question and that the "strong" contestant wins the money on offer.) The money tree is given a total renovation (see right), with all amounts between $1,000 and $1,000,000 (not inclusive) reduced, and the 10th question milestone is removed. If one of the contestants answers a question incorrectly, they are eliminated, leave with nothing, and the highest value remaining on the money tree is removed.
The game ends either when all contestants are eliminated, or when the question for the highest value in the money tree is answered. If this last question is answered correctly, the answering player receives the amount of money. If it is answered incorrectly or not answered in time, the last player to be eliminated receives either nothing (which means that nobody receives any prize money for that show), or $1,000 if the 5th question milestone is reached. No final contestant has ever gone away empty-handed.

Million Dollar Money Drop

Million Dollar Money Drop

Million Dollar Money Drop is a game show which airs on Fox in the United States and Canada. It is based on the U.K. series The Million Pound Drop Live. However, unlike the original UK version, it is not broadcast live, and there are several changes to the format.

A team of two people with a pre-existing relationship is presented with $1,000,000 in $20 bills, banded in bundles of $20,000 (50 bundles = $1,000,000). The team must risk the entire amount on each of seven multiple-choice questions.

For each question, the contestants choose one of two categories, then indicate which answer(s) they wish to risk their money on by moving the bundles of cash onto a row of trap doors, termed "drops," each of which corresponds to one answer. However, they must always keep at least one drop "clear" with no money on it. In addition, six of the seven questions have a time limit; any money that is not placed on an answer when time runs out will be lost.

Once the money is in place, the trap doors for the incorrect answers are opened, and the cash on them falls out of sight and is lost. The contestants then continue the game using the cash they had placed on the correct answer. They get to keep whatever money is left after the seventh question; if they lose everything before reaching this point, the game ends immediately and they leave with nothing.

In some episodes the audience can play along live online.

QI - Quite Interesting

QI Quite Interesting

QI (Quite Interesting) is a British comedy panel game television quiz show created and co-produced by John Lloyd, hosted by Stephen Fry, and featuring permanent panellist Alan Davies. Most of the questions are extremely obscure, making it unlikely that the correct answer will be given. To compensate, points are awarded not only for right answers, but also for interesting ones, regardless of whether they are right or even relate to the original question. Conversely, points are deducted from a panellist who gives "answers which are not only wrong, but pathetically obvious", typically answers that are generally believed to be true but in fact are not. Points are also often deducted if an obvious joke answer is given. In addition, bonus points are often awarded or deducted for various challenges or incorrect references to a certain thing or place, varying from show to show.

Cash Cab

July 28th 2010 07:16
Cash Cab is a TV game show devised by Adam Wood that originated in the United Kingdom and has been licensed to television networks in numerous other countries. Passengers in a specially outfitted taxi cab are surprised and offered the chance to win money by correctly answering a series of general knowledge or trivia questions on the way to their destination. The American version of Cash Cab has comedian Ben Bailey as host, while the Australian version features James Kerley, and the Canadian version features Adam Growe.

A support van tails the Cash Cab containing producers and a camera crew for the various street shots. The staff provides logistical information and questions by way of a walkie-talkie and earpiece worn by the host. After the potential contestants enter and hire the cab, they are made aware that they are in the Cash Cab as lights and a fanfare play inside accompanied by the host's greeting. The contestants are also told that once their travelling begins, the cab will not take detours of any kind unless directed by a police officer, stop sign, traffic light or other legal means of diverting traffic, and the host offers them the chance to get out of the cab if they do not wish to play. Contestants must stay in the cab until they reach their destination in order to keep the money they have won in the game

Minute to Win It

July 26th 2010 07:06
Minute to Win It is a primetime reality/game show.

To advance to the next level, the contestant must successfully complete a given task with a time limit of 60 seconds, either having to fully complete the task before the time runs out, perform a specific action for the time period, or have a specific task be completed at the end of the period. If time expires or the conditions of the task cannot be fulfilled (such as by the contestant using up any allotted attempts or committing a foul), the contestant loses a life. If the contestant loses all three of their lives, the game ends and the contestant's winnings drop down to the $0 (if level 1 was not beaten), $1,000 (if level 5 was not beaten), $50,000 (if level 5 was beaten), or $250,000 (if level 8 was beaten). These tasks progressively increase in difficulty throughout the game
