Desktop Tower Defense

January 22nd 2010 06:32

Desktop Tower Defense (DTD) is a Flash-based browser game. The game had been played over 15.7 million times as of July 2007 and was one of Webware 100's top ten entertainment web applications of 2007.

The game is played on a map resembling an office desktop. The player must stop a set number of enemies, known in the genre as "creeps," from reaching a set point on the playing field. This is accomplished by building and upgrading towers that shoot at, damage and kill the enemy creeps before they are able to reach their objective. Unlike many other tower defense games, the path of the creeps themselves is not set; instead, the towers built determine the path of the creeps, who take the shortest path they can find to the exit. The game prevents making an exit inaccessible.

The creeps come in waves at set intervals. Each wave of creeps has different characteristics, such as immunity to certain towers, extra resistance to certain towers, and the abilities to spawn new creeps, move faster than normal, or fly over the towers instead of following the maze. For each wave, the game rotates among the types of creeps. Several times during gameplay, boss waves will appear. These waves consists of just one or two large creeps each, that are extremely difficult to defeat.

One tactic is "juggling" in which the player removes a tower to create an alternate path to the exit and then closes off the other path, forcing the creeps to travel back through the maze. Juggling becomes more difficult as the game progresses, since the time required to remove a tower increases each time a tower is removed.

The player has a set number of lives that diminishes every time a creep gets through the defenses the player has built and reaches its objective. Upon loss of the last life, the game is over and the player is defeated.

The game can be played in three difficulty levels: easy, medium, and hard. In addition, there are several challenge modes available for those seeking more from the game. Challenges range from "The 100", where the player must defeat 100 levels of successively difficult creeps to "3K Fixed", where the player has to build a fixed set of towers (including the upgrades) with just 3000 gold. There are also various fun modes different in gameplay than the other, harder ones.

Clone Wars

February 27th 2009 08:46
Elite Forces: The Clone Wars is a fantastic free online RTS game.

The objective is to capture your opponent’s barracks. You are the blue team while your enemy is red. Send units to the red barracks to attack. To attack another building, click on your barracks and then click the enemy barracks you wish to attack. You will send 1/2 the number of units you have in your barracks.

You have to capture the opponent’s barracks to produce your units. The grey barracks are neutral and will not attack, take them over to maximise unit output. The number of units in a single barracks is limited. Press the space bar to de-select your barracks and again to select all barracks. Capture the larger barracks to produce troops faster, to select multiple barracks, drag and drop. You can add to the selection by holding 'ctrl'. Capture all barracks and you win!

If units meet half way they will battle where they are. Battles are always fought instantly and are one for one, the number of troops in a barracks is written on the top, the same is for troops on the move. The fewer troops in a group the faster they'll move.
Sometimes you will have more than one enemy to deal with so think quick!

Dune 2

December 26th 2008 11:37
Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty is a Dune computer game released in 1992 by Westwood Studios. It is based upon David Lynch's 1984 movie Dune, an adaptation of Frank Herbert's science fiction novel of the same name.

While not the first real-time strategy (RTS) game, Dune II established a format that would be followed for years to come, and was the first to use the mouse to move units, allowing players to fluidly interact with their troops. As such, Dune II was the first modern real-time strategy game. Striking a balance between complexity and innovation, it was a huge success and laid the foundation for the coming Command & Conquer, the Warcraft series, and many other RTS games.

The player takes the role of a commander of one of three interplanetary houses, the Atreides, the Harkonnen or the Ordos, with the objective of wresting control of Arrakis from the two other houses. House. The basic strategy in the game is to harvest spice from the treacherous sand dunes using a harvester vehicle, convert the spice into credits via a refinery and to build military units with these acquired credits in order to fend off and destroy the enemy.

Dune II is one of the most influential games in the real-time strategy genre. Though not every characteristic was unique, attributes such as fog of war, and the game's model for resource-extraction, base creation, and military micromanagement became several standards upon which the RTS genre is based. Obvious influences of Dune II can be seen in numerous games, particularly in Westwood's own Command & Conquer series.
