Donkey Kong

August 15th 2007 12:12
Donkey Kong is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981. The game is an early example of the platform genre as the gameplay focuses on manoeuvring the main character across a series of platforms while dodging obstacles. The storyline is thin but well developed for its time. In it, Mario (originally called Jumpman) must rescue a damsel in distress from a giant ape named Donkey Kong. The hero and ape would go on to be two of Nintendo's more popular characters.

Despite initial misgivings on the part of Nintendo's American staff, Donkey Kong proved a tremendous success in both North America and Japan. Nintendo licensed the game to Coleco, who developed home console versions for numerous platforms. Other companies simply cloned Nintendo's hit and avoided royalties altogether. Miyamoto's characters appeared on cereal boxes, television cartoons, and dozens of other places. A court suit brought on by Universal City Studios, alleging that Donkey Kong violated their trademark of King Kong, ultimately failed. The success of Donkey Kong and Nintendo's win in the courtroom helped position the company to dominate the video game market in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Prince of Persia

August 13th 2007 11:53
Prince of Persia is a platform game, originally developed by Jordan Mechner in 1989 for the Apple II, that was widely seen as a great leap forward in the quality of animation seen in computer games. Mechner used a process called rotoscoping, in which he studied many hours of film of his younger brother David running and jumping in white clothes, to ensure that all the movements looked just right. Also unusual was the method of combat: protagonist and enemies fought with swords, not projectile weapons, as was the case in most contemporary games. Mechner has said that when he started programming, the first ten minutes of Raiders of the Lost Ark had been one of the main inspirations for the character's acrobatic responses in a dangerous environment.

After the original release on the Apple II, Prince of Persia was ported to a wide range of platforms, including the Amiga, Apple Macintosh, DOS, NES, Game Boy, Sega Mega Drive, Game Gear, SNES, Sharp X68000, Atari ST and SAM Coupé. The game managed to surprise and captivate the player despite being at first glance, repetitive. This was achieved by interspersing intelligent puzzles and deadly traps all along the path the Prince had to take to complete the game—all this packaged in fluid, life-like motion.

Prince of Persia also influenced a sub-genre, which imitated the sprawling non-scrolling levels, fluid animation, and control style pioneered by Prince.

Fill It is a great example of simple game play that results in an excellent game.
The aim is to fill the screen by joining areas of the game space with your ship.
Remember, the birds can't touch your trail before the shape is created and as such you can only cover a small area at a time.
You are only given three lives so be careful!

The controls are also very simple -> just use the arrow keys to move your ship.

Give Fill It a go as it's a well designed game.

Falling Sand Game

October 12th 2006 04:12
World of Sand and its later versions are sandbox type games. The game involves four different particles falling from the top of the screen, which all look and move similar to sand: sand, water, salt, and oil. Each of these elements have properties that can be manipulated, such as burning, desiccating, growing, and eroding. Along with these four, additional elements can be placed on the screen with the mouse, some that are solid and stationary instead of flowing. By mixing the different elements together, many colorful designs, complex structures, and systems can be created.

In addition to placing elements, the speed of movement, the amount of particles falling from the top of the screen, and the brush can be customised into different sizes or an eraser

Dungeon Man 3

August 16th 2006 02:52
This is one of those old style RPG games that were mostly text based, and you read a description of what's around you then make a decision of what to do. There's something about these old style games that draws you in. This is also the first Dungeon Man game to contain graphics, but it's still mostly text based.

Basically you find yourself in a dungeon and need to escape

N64 Roms

July 6th 2006 04:03
In addition to yesterdays post on SNES roms, today I'll be looking at emulators and roms for the Nintendo 64 (N64). The N64 was Nintendo's third home games console and was released in 1996.
One of the oldest and most popular N64 emulators is called 1964, it has support for almost every rom ever released and can be easily downloaded from the official download page here.
The N64 had many classic games such as Goldeneye, Mario 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing , and many more. As for downloading the Roms to play, they are slightly larger than the SNES roms at 10-15 MB each. freeroms has a nice selection, as does romhustler.

Snes Roms

July 5th 2006 00:05
For a few years now you have been able to play the old Super Nintendo (SNES) games on your PC for free using an emulator. The Super Nintendo games for use with an emulator are called "roms". You can download roms easliy and they are only a couple of MB each. The practice of downloading and playing SNES games is becoming increasingly popular as people wish to relive the old classics they enjoyed so much.
There are many emulators to choose from, but I will be looking at one of the most popular, Snes9x.
Snes9x has several capabilities which other emulators do not have. It can "smooth" the appearance of the screen through a variety of anti-aliasing schemes, and it has a better quality of sound output than the original console systems. In addition, it can "save" the game at any point by recording the game state. Also included is a built-in Game Genie, which allows users to enter cheat codes for their games.
