Spiral Knights

September 21st 2011 06:36
Spiral Knights is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Three Rings Design and published by Sega. The free-to-play, Java-based game was released to the general public on April 4, 2011.

In the game, the player controls a knight of the Spiral Knights order, which has crash-landed on the mysterious planet Cradle. Knights collectively explore the Clockworks, the mechanized, constantly reorganizing dungeon that fills the planet's interior. The knights equip armour and weapons to aid them in their battles against the monsters inhabiting the Clockworks. When they are not exploring, knights trade with each other and with vendors, in order to improve their equipment.

When a player creates a knight, they first proceed through two or three tutorial levels (one is optional), learning the game's basic controls. Through talking with non-player characters, players learn about the plot and the economy of the game world. Once a knight leaves the tutorial levels by travelling to Haven, they may never return to them.

Spiral Knights is a top-down, third-person, real-time action-adventure game, comparable to The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures. While thousands of knights may be participating in Spiral Knights at any given time, any given knight interacts directly with only a small subset of them. For example, in Haven there are typically tens of knights present; however, there are tens of independent copies of Haven being maintained simultaneously. When a knight is in the Clockworks, he interacts with only three (or fewer) other knights, as well as numerous monsters.

Spiral Knights differs from some other role-playing games in that the characters do not possess personal characteristics (e.g., experience levels, hit points) that improve over time. Rather, only a character's equipment improves over time. Namely, each knight begins the game with a set of 0-star equipment, and gradually acquires better equipment as he works toward 5-star items.

Spiral Knights is designed to be primarily a cooperative, rather than a competitive, game. Knights explore the Clockworks with up to three other knights. Most items that the party picks up are shared among its members.

Wizard101

September 7th 2011 03:53
Wizard101 is a 3D massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Players take on the role of students of Wizardry to save the Spiral (which is the set of worlds this game takes place in), and battle a variety of creatures by casting spells using a turn-based combat system similar to collectible card games.

Players advance in the game by accepting quests to learn new spells, gain equipment, and collect gold.
At the beginning the player controls a novice wizard, who is named by the player using a set of words at the start of the game. That wizard joins the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts, a school of wizardry located in a fictional town called Wizard City. Instead of the traditional character classes, Wizard101 offers players a choice among seven different "magic schools" (Fire, Ice, Storm, Myth, Life, Death, and Balance) which will influence character development and parts of the magical spells (in form of collectible cards) available to the player in combat.

In Wizard101, the different areas accessible to players are referred to as "worlds". Upon character creation, only a part of Wizard City (The Commons, Ravenwood, Unicorn Way, Old Town, Shopping District, Triton Avenue, Golem Tower, and a short introduction to Grizzleheim) is opened to access. As the player progresses, more worlds become available. Availability depends on subscriptions and/or the purchase of crowns.

Allods Online

August 3rd 2011 03:59
he third in the Rage of Mages series, Allods Online takes the RPG elements of the original games and presents them in an MMORPG. Developed with a $12 million budget, it is available as a free online game with a simple registration required to play and no ongoing subscriptions.

Allods Online has many traditional MMORPG elements such as quests, NPCs, and dungeons. It also has an element that is fairly unique - the ability for players to build ships and sail around in a vast expanse of magical space called "the Astral". In the Astral, players can fight each other in ship-to-ship combat as well as discover new zones like the Goblin Republic that cannot be reached any other way. Furthermore, ships have individual crew stations which can be operated by multiple players on the same ship together.
Another way for players to test their skills is via PvP on maps such as the Holy Land. The Holy Land tends to be extremely crowded due to its position as one of the primary locations of the war between the two factions - the Empire and the League. Open PvP, utilizing a flagging system found in many traditional MMORPGs, is also available in any area of the game, and gives special bonuses to players who quest and hunt while their Flag of War is raised. There are also special areas where players can engage in large-scale PvP activities to earn unique rewards.
The game also provides a developed guild system that encourages players to work together to improve their guild ranking and allow them to participate in more content, such as the Astral Confrontation, as well as design custom regalia to look unique in the game and benefit special abilities.
