Breakout is a classic PC game first developed in 1976. Since then there have been numerous improvements and spin-offs such as Brickout, Super Breakout, Breakout 2000 and many more.
All games work on the same principle. There are layers of bricks on the top of the screen, and a ball which bounces around and destroys bricks it hits. The player has a paddle down the bottom to keep bouncing the ball back up. If the ball hits the floor, the player looses a life.
There are of course many variations, common ones include bricks taking a certain number of hits to be destroyed and being worth different points, plus bonuses such as paddle size increasing, extra paddles or even extra balls.
As the levels progress, difficulty is increased by adding more bricks, having tougher bricks, reducing paddle size and increasing ball speed.
There are many free versions of Breakout and its spinoffs online. One good example is Breakout 2. This version has a few extra features to make the game more interesting but not so many as to take away from the brilliant simplicity that continues to make Breakout so popular.
In Breakout 2 there are different coloured bricks which have the following attributes:
Purple: Normal size paddle plus10 points
Red: Small paddle plus 10 points
Green: Large paddle plus 10 points
Yellow: 25 points
Blue: 50 Points
