PlanetSide

June 22nd 2007 09:51
PlanetSide is a Massively multiplayer online first-person shooter computer game published by Sony Online Entertainment and released on May 19, 2003.

In PlanetSide three Empires fight for control of about 10 vast planets. Each soldier in each Empire is a human player. At a particular moment in time there may be hundreds of players online. A player may choose to be a generic soldier or to specialize in a certain role such as tank driver, sniper, commander or more. To be successful in PlanetSide, a player needs skills in cooperation, situational awareness and fast reflexes.

At any one time, each of the three PlanetSide servers host hundreds of players fighting a persistent war on foot, in ground vehicles or in the air across desert wastes, icy mountains, lush forests or dank swamps. The goal is simple: each faction must attempt to capture as many facilities as possible on the surface of the planet whilst denying them to their enemies. There are many strategies and opportunities for tacticians to divert the flow of battle and learning the intricacies and depth of the game can take many months. The player controls his chosen character from a first-person perspective and can travel about the vast environments on foot or in one of the many available vehicles. Combat is fast-paced and does not suffer from the 'hands-off' feel of many other Massively Multiplayer Online Games.

Before entering combat, it is important for a tactician to identify:

The empire affiliation of the enemy. Each empire has a particular theme for their weapons and vehicles, and a leader should equip his troops to counter such.
What vehicles they may encounter. There are several types of bases, but only a few types can create heavy vehicles (tanks, bombers, etc.) and a leader needs to make sure, usually through a flyover by a scout aircraft, what vehicles he needs to worry about.

To get started with PlanetSide visit the official site here. It includes game information, gallery, downloads, free online game trial and news. Also offers player leader boards and statistics.

Darkfall

June 20th 2007 09:35
Darkfall is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in development by Aventurine SA that combines real-time action and strategy in a fantasy setting. Expected to feature unrestricted pvp, complete looting, and a player skill dependant combat system, Darkfall is highly anticipated by the player versus player (PvP) community. Developers claim that the game is currently in private beta testing, and Aventurine has an internal goal to begin the open beta in Summer 2007.

There are six playable races in Darkfall. Unlike other MMOG's, racial choice does not heavily influence your characters choices or progression options: 95% of the skills may be learned regardless of your race, the remainder are Prestige/Racial abilities. Each race begins play in their own homeland, and have their own unique storylines, histories, and racial alliances/enemies. The races are as follows:

Darkfall is expected to have several features that set it apart from the majority of MMORPGs:
• Unrestricted PvP, with no safe zones. Game mechanics will punish killing of racial allies. (see alignment section below).
• Complete looting. All items will be dropped on death, and can be looted by anyone who opens the corpse. Armor and weapons will be somewhat easy to replace.
• Inter-character and projectile-character collision detection. Projectiles (spells, arrows, cannonballs etc.) can be dodged. Players can be pushed or blocked by other players or by explosions.
• Manual aiming & blocking.
• Naval warfare, with the ability to sink player controlled ships.
• Dynamic, physical weather.
• No radar or floating names (Player made clan banners worn for identification.)
• Ranged combat will be viewed from first person perspective. Melee combat will be viewed from third person perspective.
• Friendly fire. If you miss with spells or arrows you may hit someone other than the character you were targeting. Area of effect offensive spells and healing spells can affect your friends and your enemies.
• Cities can be built by players.
• Player built cities can be destroyed. Each player built city will contain a guildstone, which protects the buildings and defensive structures in the vicinity from attack. The guildstone is invulnerable, except when it has been weakened by a Gloomer. Gloomers can be built by players after they have built a siege fort next to the target city. The siege fort can be attacked and destroyed at any time, during or after construction. If a city is destroyed, a new clanstone constructed on the site is temporarily vulnerable to attack.
• There will be a limit on the number of players and NPC's that can bind to a clanstone.

Soldier Front

June 1st 2007 12:10
Soldier Front, commonly abbreviated as SF, is a tactical first-person shooter hosted by ijji.

Soldier Front is a online team based FPS that resembles War Rock or Counterstrike. There are 3 different game modes: Single Battle, Team Battle, and Clan Battle. Players join either the red team or the blue team and battle the opposing team to accomplish predetermined objectives (except in Single Battle). At the start of a round, the opposing teams spawn simultaneously at predetermined start points on the map and proceed with the mission. When one team completes their objective/eliminates the opposing team, they score a "win", and the map resets. The team that achieves the predetermined amount of "wins" first wins the match. Guns, grenades, and armour must be purchased in a shop beforehand; once purchased, the gun/grenade remains in your inventory permanently unless you sell it. Armour is "rented", meaning that after a certain period of time they are unequipped and taken out of your inventory and must be "rented" again in order to continue usage. Guns, grenades, and armour are bought with SP, the currency of SF
